tips to score good marks in the reasoning selection

Reasoning sections are important for every bank exam. So one must prepare the reasoning section without any fail. The reasoning section is a little tricky but it all depends upon the time given to it and on the amount of practice. If you practice it well and understand the difficulty level of it, then you can score maximum marks. Usually, the reasoning section has 35 marks in the preliminary level and scoring 25+ is a decent score which will also brag your total score.

The section involves questions from verbal reasoning (logical reasoning) based on analytical reasoning and critical thinking. It involves one’s ability to confine and identify the various components of any given statement. Only a person with more practice in logical reasoning ability can score more in the bank exams.

There are different topics for the reasoning section and the candidate needs to give ample amount of time on each topic and work on it.

The topics of the reasoning section include:

  1. Seating Arrangement and Puzzles
  2. Blood Relations
  3. Inequality Questions
  4. Coding and De-coding
  5. Direction Sense & Ranking
  6. Syllogism/ Data sufficiency
  7. Alphanumeric Series
  8. Input-Output

Here are some of the tips to score good marks in the reasoning section:

  1. Generally, the reasoning questions for bank exams are divided into two types: Verbal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning
  2. Remember your plan for each question as there are different types of logical reasoning questions so you must know what to do when you encounter them so that they can be solved within a less period and move on to the next.
  3. Try to avoid the tricky and time-consuming questions so that you can move on to the next question as this type of question can reduce your confidence level during the exam and loss of time which may have a huge effect on your score.
  4. Analyze and find out the most important topics.
  5. Candidates need to solve relevant puzzles can greatly help in improving solving skills and thereby helps to improve their reasoning
  6. Depending on the number of questions asked from the topic, one can allocate the preparation time to each topic and provide adequate attention to every topic.
  7. Don’t waste your first few minutes looking at the answers. It is a common tendency to look at the answer options, once you view the question. This can be wasteful. Your time is precious when attending a test. The initial looks at the answer options will not help you to understand the sequence and but could distract you. Focusing on the question and the sequence, then get a general idea of what the missing image could be, you could check the answer options to eliminate some of the options.
  8. Sometimes the effective way to test whether your logic is consistent is to check if the pattern works backward as well as forward. Of course, this will not always be relevant, but at times, looking at it backward will just mean the pattern in reverse and if it works in reverse it will help reveal that your pattern works logically.
  9. Prefer to answer the easy questions first. The coding and decoding, syllogism, and blood relations topics questions are quite easy.
  10. When it comes to categorizing correctly, nothing helps more than understanding the vocabulary. It is, therefore, advised to memorize as many logical words as possible. If you don’t remember the terms, and if the only hints provided the sufficient condition, you’ll lose time on that part. So one should take sufficient time to learn as many words as possible to be comfortable on the day of the test.
  11. Practice difficult diagrammatic indicator words so that it becomes less tricky for you on the day of the examination.
  12. If 20 questions are asked from the puzzles and seating arrangement portion. It means, 12 to 10 questions are the less difficult spot and one must try to answer these questions.
  13. It’s important that one must develop their skills in flexibility and spotting similar language as they can express one idea in nearly a hundred ways, without flexibility and an open mind, you might miss that spot on the test. Being prepared for any wording is one of the best ways to improve your logical reasoning scores.
  14. Try to learn the flaws to improve logical reasoning. Giving time to be familiar with many flaws is one of the surest ways to improve your logical reasoning score. As we can see that these flaws aren’t taught in many schools, so they might not be well known.
  15. You can see that more than 50% of questions are from puzzles and seating arrangements. So, you must try to answer questions from this topic within minutes which will be easier when solving the later questions with sufficient time.
  16. Try to leave the difficult questions and those questions that lower your confidence level and solve those questions on which you have more than 80% confidence.
  17. Try to avoid guessing during the exam as there is a negative mark for each wrong answer which may reduce your total scoring.
  18. You can also join some reasoning classes with the person most familiar with the section. It will help you understand better. Learn some shortcuts and tricks from experts in that area of the field.
  19. Make short notes on the tricky questions so that it becomes easy to revise at the time of examination.
  20. Select the most relevant book as it also depends on the quality of the study materials.
  21. Attend the doable questions first and then attend the remaining miscellaneous questions.
  22. Refer to different questions of logical reasoning questions available online.
  23. Follow some shortcut methods and tricks to save time during the examination as it a very crucial factor for clearing the exam.
  24. Try to solve at least 20 different questions on logical reasoning. Solving questions each day within a dedicated time will improve your question-solving accuracy.
  25. Appear for mock test and practice set papers as it to will help you to improve your speed and accuracy.
  26. Do proper revisions on each topic as each topic plays an ample role in the paper.
